Nintendo 3DS More Powerful Than Wii

3D is the new HD. Recently top tech developers have started a trend in which red and blue glasses just won't do. 3D is moving from the movie screen to our own homes with the help of video game consoles. Nintendo is the latest to tackle the 3D market with its unreleased handheld system, the Nintendo 3DS.

According to "unnamed developers" the 3DS will be more powerful than the Wii, with capabilities rivaling the 360 and PS3. Sound unbelieveable? Here's the leaked quote:

"Several developers that have experienced 3DS in its current form have reported, off the record, that it has processing capabilities that far exceed the Nintendo Wii and bring the device with abilities that are close to HD consoles such as Playstation 3 and Xbox 360."

With little or no information available for 3DS, its hard to know whether these claims will be realized. As IGN points out, adding 3D elements to any media is a long and difficult process. It requires visuals to be "drawn" twice (one for each eye) and demands a high level of processing power. Most PC's with 3D gaming capabilities for example, are bulky, costly-looking devices so one might wonder how Nintendo will stuff all that hardware into an itty-bitty DS.

If Nintendo manages to pull this off, the gaming industry will never be the same. The scheduled release date for the Nintendo 3DS is set for March 2011 and we're not crossing our fingers just yet. Hopefully more information will be available at this year's E3!
